The Art of Sound Design

Last night while working on the OST for the upcoming short film The Tent, I got sucked into ROLI's Equator 2. Many of the samples are great out-of-the-box, but the sonic ecosystem we're developing demanded some unique play techniques to tell the nuanced story. Beyond bending pitch, I was manipulating the aftertouch and release parameters of my ROLI LUMI to delicately play synth textures to match the story on screen in realtime.

The art of sound design is more than picking the right (or wrong) instruments, it's the nuanced performance, paired with the proper technology that can open up new sonic palettes to be developed and stories to be better told. Excited for you all to hear this one.

Composition Kerning

There's a concept in design, particularly typography, called kerning. It involves adjusting the spacing of letters, lines, and positioning to achieve a more visually precise and appealing result. However, getting the layout just right takes time and patience.

This concept has been applied to various professions and applications, but while working on a new score, the art of audio kerning has been essential to supporting the story and the director's vision.

One slight adjustment to the rhythm here, a turn of this instrument to the right ear there, a fade that needs to happen at just the right time to match the visual.

These examples are the minutiae that reflect Mood Matters They tell compelling stories. From composition to mixing, kerning is in every phase of our writing process. It requires patience, but ultimately, it leads to a better narrative.
