The Start of Something

I (Pat) am embarking on a 9-week journey to compose, produce, and release "Project Storm," following the complete Rosefinch writing process from research to release on March 13th, 2026. You're coming with me.
The Start of Something

This week I (Pat) began a new project that’s equal parts music composition, writing process exploration, and content creation. My goal: write a piece of music from idea to completion in 9 weeks going through all eight phases of the Rosefinch writing process, and take you along for the journey. Here are the phases we'll explore:

  1. Research
  2. Exercises
  3. Solo Ideation
  4. Composition
  5. Production
  6. Mixing
  7. Mastering
  8. Release

The piece will officially be published on March 13th, 2026.

Research

The first phase of our writing process is the research phase. Here we gather inspiration, study reference tracks, and collect ideas from various sources to inform the creative and musical direction.

“Project Storm,” as I’m tentatively calling this, began with a mental picture of the rough winter weather of the Great Lakes. Lake Superior in particular has claimed countless ships over the years due to the gale force winds and waves reaching 30 feet. The visual paired with some dark cinema references including Chernobyl, Dune, Bladerunner 2049, and Oppenheimer gave me the inspiration needed for this project.

As a part of the research phase we curate 1) keywords to guide our writing, 2) reference tracks to inform our composition and mixing/master, and 3) visual references to continue inspiring. All of this results in a moodboard that can guide our writing.

Here's a peek at my moodboard.
