Precision
Composition has wrapped.
I’ve got the form locked, the themes written, and the dynamic intent in place. I’ve selected my instruments, worked on layering, and added some light FX.
Now the hard focused work begins.
As I move into production, I’m thinking more and more about how it sounds. Did I add enough? Did I add too much? What would a 3% bump in saturation look like? Is my arp hitting at the right impact moments?
I really love this part of the process because it’s a chance to zoom in, down to each note’s length and velocity, and zoom out to listen thoughtfully to each section’s intent.
It’s easy for this to blur into the mixing phase a little bit (and especially easy given the time crunch!), but this is a chance to get surgical with this piece of music and keep answering the question: is this accomplishing the vision?
