Between Beauty and Brutality

How you can leverage AI as your composition partner.
Between Beauty and Brutality

Now that I (Pat) have a finished moodboard consisting of guiding ideas, keywords, reference tracks, and some visual inspiration, I decided to run all my ideas and project plan through Claude to formalize a finished creative brief and narrative for my piece. I do this for a couple of reasons:

  1. With the right prompt, any AI tool can help expound on my ideas quicker than I can. It’s like having a writing partner with me in the studio who is aligned to my same goal.
  2. It allows me to have a clear written record of the project scope, what I’m hoping to accomplish, and more (see below). This gives me an anchor to come back to if I get stuck or need to revisit my initial inspiration quickly.

Here was the prompt I gave Claude:

I am a composer writing my next piece of music. The piece is inspired by the rough seas and gale force winds of the Great Lakes. The piece should feel dark and melancholy with gritty synthesizers and orchestral instruments. I want the piece to have a brief moment of calm though symbolizing the sun cutting through the clouds as seen over the lake. Formulate for me a creative brief summarizing all of the points listed, and create an expanded narrative to accompany me in the writing process.

And, here is an outline of what I got back (full text removed for brevity):

  • Project overview
  • Core Narrative
  • Sonic Palette
  • Production Approach
  • Key Imagery & Metaphors
  • Compositional Goals
  • References and Inspiration

Pretty comprehensive, right? Each of these sections had 3-5 sentences of excellent reference material, and while I might not utilize some of this, it’s nice to have an additional partner in the studio helping me to bring this vision to life. The most helpful area that it helped me curate was a core narrative in four acts. Here’s what it generated:
